Field Trips and Touch Ups

Both Eakins classes spent a part of the last week going on field trips. On the first trip, they visited the Constitution Center to see an exhibit on Architecture and learned how it can be a tool for social impact.

The second trip was to the Fairmount Waterworks, where the group learned how water is distributed to all of Philadelphia now, and how it has been done in the past.

The Class poses in front of their wheatpasted design collage

During the final week of the summer session, Miriam’s West Philly E3 class went to town wheatpasting their designs on business storefronts and sidewalks near Penn Treaty Park. The group pasted imagery along a vast area of streets ranging from 735 West Girard to the 1500 block of Frankford Avenue! The students also picked 3 poles along Girard Ave. to place a lot of the smaller imagery and scraps.

The Completed Doorway Signs

Finalizing the Signage

The Southwest E3 group was able to get settled in the temporary space and complete the doorway signs for the center. The group made minor adjustments to the designs and removed the small lettering from each piece, after agreeing that they weren’t aesthetically pleasing once they were painted.

By the end of this last week, Keir, Aliene, and the students look forward to having all 43 5′x5′ panels installed on the mural wall. Each student will get a chance to adhere panels with a squeegie and Novagel (the preferred adhesive). Its a messy process but the results are long-lasting.

Dedication at the Eliza Shirley House

Posing in front of one of the 5 newly installed murals

The North Broad E3 class spent the first 3 days this week installing the murals in both rooms of the Eliza Shirley House. The cloth paintings were permanently installed with Nova Gel. Once everything was up, the remainder of the old murals that showed underneath were painted over. There was a fair amount of “on the spot” improvisation for some of the walls. Lines and shapes emanating from some main imagery were added to better fill the space. Everyone was pleased with the final result.

Working in Teams to Finish Up

Sponging in the overpainting

The MLK Mural Corps class operated on two fronts this week–half of the students worked on wall prep with Keir, and the other half stayed with Aliene and sponged in large areas of colors.

Keir’s group primed over the old mural and snapped a gridded 5′x5′ pattern of lines for installing the panels. A few passers by were surprised to see the old mural covered up, but the class promised that the new mural would be even better.

Finishing Up at West Philly High

The Southwest E3 had a hectic week due to flooding at their center early last week. The group has found a temporary home at West Philly High, where they will finish out their summer. Despite their reorganization, the displaced students still managed to find the time to pull together a tight presentation of the signage project for a representative of PYN, the summer program’s funder.

The remainder of the week was spent working on the signs and setting up the temporary classroom. Despite the setback, the group still looks forward to having the project completed by next week.
